Abstract

There are different ways people choose to identify themselves (or not) on the Internet. Attribution can be very important, but pseudonyms and anonymity are also an established part of many cultures -- for good reason. Identification can be helpful or even necessary for certain services, while optional or unnecessary for others. Identifiers are not synonymous with identity and can be used in pseudonymous ways to effect reliable communication with parties whose identities may be unknown.
